On Wednesday November 15th all of Parkside’s winter sports began, including indoor track and field. Head coach Zack Osborne is excited for the upcoming season, as he said “I think we are going to be good this year, we have returning runners and new ones.” Assistant Coach Mitch Simpson who works with not only runners but also athletes who do field events says “We are going to rake up a lot of points at meets not only for running but also for field events like shot put, pole vault, and high jump”. “I think we can go far this year” said Osborne with excitement.

To prepare for upcoming meets the coaches (Zack Osborne, Mitch Simpson, and Blair Osborne) split the team into two groups long distance and sprinters, also working with the athletes individually making every runner as strong as they can be. The team also goes into Parkside’s weight room twice a week lifting weights and other exercises to improve their strength. The track team has also started working on field events, senior Kara Osborne who made a personal record of nine feet six inches last year and coming in second place at regionals in the 2016 school year for pole vault is planning to continue working hard and making another higher personal record for the 2017-2018 school year!

The athletes are excited for the season to start as well. Senior Miyuki Schoyen who sprints and does high jump for Parkside’s indoor track and field team is thrilled for the upcoming season. Schoyen said “I love track, last year the girls 200 and 400 team made it to states so hopefully we could do that again, we lost a few seniors and other runners but I think well be just as strong as we were last year.” Good luck to the indoor track team as they begin their preseason, make sure to go and support our runners at local meets!
