During this month of January the government has shut down for two days. It all started at midnight on January 20, 2018, and ended on the evening of Monday, January 22. The shutdown began because of a failure to fund government operations and some of there agencies. This happened because of the refusal to extend the status of the very controversial DACA immigration policy. This is a serious problem because those people covered under the program should be deported. Also there were financial disputes over building the wall between Mexico and the United States.

A government shutdown is the closure of the nonessential offices of the government due to lack of approval on the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Approval is reached when Congress passes all of the spending bills regarding the federal budget. This can be hard to do when the democrats and republicans don’t agree on what to spend the money on.

In this case the republicans wanted the funding for the wall and DACA while the democrats did not. Congress is controlled by a majority of Republicans, which should make it easier to get what they want, but congress needs a 60 percent vote in order to pass legislations or the federal budget. Parkside student Maura Mears said in an interview “ I don’t entirely agree with what the Republicans are trying to do I believe there are better things to worry about and spend money on but I don’t believe the democrats are helping by filibustering and shutting down the government. I don’t understand why they don’t just compromise.”

This affects Parkside High School and all other schools in the United States because of the problem with the governments budget. If Congress can’t agree on the budget for schools then the government could shut down again and the schools wouldn’t get there money needed. In a interview with Asher Amy, he said “I find this shut down ridiculous. Congress needs to get it together and find ways to compromise.” This particular shut down wasn’t because of financial disputes over schools but this could easily happen again if the Democrats and Republicans don’t learn to agree.
